Dr TV Ramakrishna with an SDI student Dear Friends, A Message from the Founders: Dear Friends, I left India in 1965 for graduate studies in the USA and ultimately made a home in this great country. The transition gave me and my family an opportunity to look back and think of the fate of the poor in India. Nothing attracted our attention as much as the problem of destitute, orphaned and homeless children in India. Although this problem is universal, it has reached an alarming proportion in India. Nearly every other second, a new child is added to India’s current population of 914 million people; a large proportion of these children are robbed of their future by poverty and poor family conditions. What will be the ultimate destiny of these children? Improving the conditions of the lives of these neglected and helpless children is a major challenge of our times. Governments alone cannot solve this problem. It cannot be solved unless thousands of caring citizens "get off the sidelines and get on the playing field" to educate these children. The term ‘Sahasra Deepika’ in Sanskrit literally means ‘thousand lights’. This seemed to us an ideal title for the type of organization that could offer hope through the concerted efforts of numerous caring individuals for these unfortunate children. As a first step to this end, we founded the Sahasra Deepika Foundation for Education Inc. (SDFE) in the USA. Similarly we formed a trust entitled "Sahasra Deepika International for Education" (SDIE) in Bangalore, India. The aim of both these organizations is to provide a vehicle for concerned individuals throughout the world to work together to better the education and care of these children, united with a spirit of compassion towards these children. The opportunity is open to all those who would like to illumine the life of a child in need with the gift of education. Please join hands and be a part of the Sahasra Deepika effort.
